anyone else who might know the answer. I am considering subscribing to "Civilization", the magazine of the Library of Congress. The one-sentence description makes it sound interesting, but I have never seen a copy of the magazine, so I am not sure exactly what to expect. Before I send in a check for the subscription, I would be interested in finding out a little more about what to expect. Anya, if I remember correctly, your Mother worked for the Library of Congress, so I think there is a chance you might be familiar with the magazine. MarinaK, given your educational background and also your obvious wide range of interests, I hope you might also be able to comment on the magazine. Comments from *anyone* who is familiar with "Civilization" would be much appreciated. With best wishes,

But if you aren't in a terrible rush and can wait a couple of weeks, I can check it out. Now if only you had asked me about the *Journal of BiblicalArchaeology"! or "The Grammar Hotline"! M |

Mom did work for LC. actually, both my parents did. but I don't personally remember the magazine "Civilization". I'm quite sure we dind't subscribe to it as a family--but that doesn't mean anything, because probably they got it at work anyway. I will ask Mom if she remembers it, and if it's any good. but right now Mom is clear across the country in CA helping my sister move. I haven't seen her online, and haven't talked to her (since Mila's phone is not hooked up yet). but I'm sure I'll be in contact with her in the next few days, and I'll try to remember to ask about "Civilization". |

to the nose of a sub, I'm not sure I consider that proof. (For anyone who doesn't speak Russian the picture is supposed to be a satallite photo of the Memphis with a massively crumpled nose) I tried to blow up the photo to get a better look, but needless to say it got very grainy very fast. If the two nations agreed to a cover up, then the Russian side didn't do a very good job, since they said the first day "We think it was a collision with a foreign sub" In fact, they've been saying that everyday since then too. Releasing satallite photos to a small newspaper isn't really keeping to the cover up either. My bet is their faked. We'll see. |

that the sub in the photo is the "Memphis"? If so, then it would appear that there were *two* submarines that collided with the Kursk. :-) Shortly after the loss of the Kursk, "expert" Russian sources were specifically naming a different U.S. sub as having been involved in a collision with the Kursk, and that sub was specifically mentioned as having been seen in Norway with collsion damage. Which sub is the one *really* responsible? Or did *both* subs collide with the Kursk? Out of curiousity, is the source for this information by any chance connected to the one that was speaking so eloquently shortly after the accident about how they were in contact with the crew and were supplying them with air through a hose? With a raised eyebrow,

Probably though it came down to money in the end. I don't for one second believe that Lee H Oswald did it, but what do I base my opinion on! A few sensationalist documentaries and watching Oliver Stones movie (which was good) but they all introduce emotion into the analysis so the plot is lost. Bottom line really, I don't care! and by the time the details get released, if they get released, and if they are true, neither will no one else. We are used to hearing of all our governments dirty tricks now, East, West, North, South but although we might get angerd or appalled we have lost the ability to trully care and take action on it,(save writing to our MP's or senators or Duma representative). And even if we can get organised and do somthing , we will give up after 5 minutes or when the going gets a bit tough. You see it all now during uindustrial disputes in our country, we've lost our bottle! When a western army goes to war now as soon as the body count threatens to go into double figures we want out. The British army are in Sierra Leon just now, training up govt. forces. Everybody didn't care. One soldier got killed trying to rescue some hostages and the great British public (swayed by the knee jerk reactions in the press)want out. I think we are, especially in the West developed countries , becoming like cattle! or is it sheep. Some farmyard animal anyway, Billy. Not ostriches. |

Russian morons, sovok , mother-rushyka - where are you from people, where your aggression comes from?
Aren't you russian friends or whatever? Articles that are being discussed here also have this single sided view on current events. Don't take me wrong I am not defending heroin addicts, they've made there choice, good luck, but some of your opinions are just something, what, welfare office brings the best in you? We were not nearly this rude until this "toyman" creature showed up. He is full of hatred and hatred causes hatred so other people joined to hate such as "Incognito" and this place turned into a fighting arena instead of a very interesting place for people to friendly discuss differences and peculiarities of Russia and US. And "not to respond" is not an option because once in a while people can not take toyman's and incognito's sh*t anymore and they feel a moral obligation to respond to them accordingly. And a spirit of hatred reigns again. I agree with you. I miss my virtual friends because nowadays they don't want to express their opinions here for the fear to be cursed by toymans and incognitos. I don't want to open my soul to such creatures and I don't blame the others. This place needs to be purified otherwise it will vanish into Never Never Land. Kate. |

relax, you'll live longer - respect to different opinions has no exeptions - where you just don't like the opinion or on the top can't stand language it was expressed with. even more I don't see anything that toyman says that is really outrages - somewhat dumb perhaps but that's again my opinion - it does not mean that i don't like him personally - even though we've never met or spoke - for all i care he can drop dead but I wouldn't bash him for what he has to say, same for incognito - udarenie na predposlednem sloge |

there are two big differences between them. Aside black energy and hatred emotions (I have already expressed my opinion on that), we should admit that Toyman brings a lot of interesting and useful links, and he is not stupid at all when it comes to some specifics on professional level, for example on weaponry or some political info. Another guy is just a miserable embicile who gives nothing but slogans and declarations. RUSSO

and "scan" all toyman's and incognito's messages. They don't have opinions at least nothing that I consider an opinion. They have hatred. One hates everything American, the other everything Russian. Unless you consider hatred an opinion I don't see what their opinions are. Toyman never said a good word to anybody here since he arrived. I don't think he ever even said a simple "Hello" to anybody here. It didn't matter if Russians or Americans tried to be nice to him on the Forum he never responded in the same manner to them. He just hates and this is the driving force of his existence. He came and poisoned this place as far as I am concerned and Incognito came after him because hatred is like a bad contagious disease. It spreads very fast. And I am being easy. Not to worry. I wish you the same. Kate. |

some don't like american - well what are they still doing in this country - again don't take me wrong - I don't like some american culture - it's not even some - a lot, also I did not like some of our russian things - but it is not hate - it is my opinion - I just put it sort of nicely, if I say it in direct words - it would not become hatered |

if toymans and incognitos did the same, there wouldn't be a problem but they insult other people who disagree with them and insult very badly because they don't have an opinion anymore. All they have is hatred. Can you really comment on the colors of the world if you are blind? No. The same as when you are blinded by hatred, you can not see anything and if you don't see anything you can not have an opinion as to what color is better looking. But let's not go further. Have a good chilly day in Atlanta. I love it. Kate. |

Kuzen, seriously, I really would like someone to practice with. I've had two years of Russian, but it was over twenty years ago, so I'v forgotten most of it. I've just got my own computer at home; and, I've given some thought of finding a Russian somewhere who'd like to make a few bucks. My new email is skinner@apex.net It's going to take me a while to get set up; I have other higher priority things to do, but in a few months, I would like to get into it. James |
