I have to admit I started to read the essays, but did not have patience to read it word for word, so I overlooked them. First I tried to go straight to the "prikladnoe zidovedenie" (you will understand why ;0)), but the link does not work yet. Then I just started from the first article. I see his point - he wants the criminals, who happened to be Jews to be punished. Well, I agree, if they are guilty, they should. Now the question is - why they were not? The author is looking for the answers, but his *enemies* so far only "intelligentsia", which is a very foggy thing. His essay is so intense that I started to have a vision of this Dragon like creature called "intelligentsia". I would not surprise, if the majority of Russia, especially people, who consider themselves "simple workers" will know now, where to look for those, who "ate all bread and meat".
As far as the anti-semitic statements. The author is thinking that Gusinsky was freed, because someone saw a beginning of Holocaust in it. I wonder, when finally Russian people will see that the FISH USUALLY GETS WROTTEN FROM THE HEAD. If he was freed, then someone WANTED HIM FREE. That SOMEONE is sitting somewhere at the wheel (or was sitting there at some point), that SOMEONE may be not even a Jew, but he knows, how manipulate people's mind with all these "protocols" histeria. The possible scenario is :
As the happy result, that SOMEONE is still sitting comfortable in his chair and laughs his heart out on all these "essays" and "conclusions" that people make, when the "easy" clue was given to them as a bonus for their lost hopes in justice. Regards, Olga

As I said, I don't support his anti-semitic escapades, but aside of that, I think he has a lot of rationale there. Let's discuss "Pavlik Morozov" and "Nationalsim" first. Would you agree with his definition of the nation (note, not ethnicity, but *nation*). If so, then you'd have to conclude that within that definition, his implifications are prefectly logical. I'd disagree that Scandinavian nations are 'quasi', they in my opinion are formed nations as well as Germans or Britts. Same with Dutchmen. But in general, it is a very good and claer analysis of the situation, and role of agitprop in screwing up natural processess of formation of the Russian nation (including, Russain, Jewish, Chechen and other ethnoses within it, which eventualluy became archeological relics like Cossacks among Russians now ;-< How about Pavlik Morozov, what is wrong with that essay? We were foolished both by communists and der'mokrat agitprops, both sides used this horrible family tragedy in their own interests. Don't worry about me, I don't think that our nationalists are stupid people (hotya durakov vezde hvataet). Any nation needs strong science and industry to compete with others. And American patriots can find common ground with Russian counterpart much easier than that bunch of der'mokrates/hypocrates.

from the further discussion of the site that you referred. I went back and read the essay on Pavlik Morozov. It might be very good that there is documentation that gives the light on the actual events, but you see, Pavlik Morozov is not an issue, the issue is how you see his actions, or better to say - how you present his actions. I remember myself in school studying him as a sample of a hero, who was ready to kill his own father in the name of the "Great Idea". Soviet propaganda tryied to install in us kids the specific standards of the "real pioneer" - if your parents/neighbors/friends say something, you should call the authorities and inform - that was an idea of the Pavlik Morozov story. Pavlik Morozov by himself could have been a victim of the political games, he might be still is. Now the story told upside down to prove some other political points - it all depends, who is at the wheel. I was laughing on the sample of Spilberg's cartoon that was given by the author in the other issue about the fact that mouse can be a Jew, but not a cat. I think, that "philosophical" theories of the author are quite funny and ignorant. Naturally, the cartoonist was trying to create some metaphor, so it is up to you, what you see in it. Overall after reading these issues I came to the conclusion that they are filled with hate and prejudice, so I am retiring from the futher discussion on the subject, because it does not worth it. In addition it is very hard for me to separate the clear anti-semitizm on that site from the "healthy patriotizm". The site is very insulting to anyone, but the "real patriots", which reminds me of the KKK and Nazi and I never even try to find the "good points" in their philosophy. It is absolutely obvious that you, Russo, are not bothered with someone, who openely hates Jews or anyone, but Russians. I am sure that, if those "essays" had anti-Russians statements, you would NOT just "disagree partially". It is a pleasure to talk to the intelligent person like you, Russo, but may be on some other topic. Olga |

of Scythian treasures from Ancient Ukraine is at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, NY. Telephone number: (718) 638-5000 (Program Information extensions 372, 373, 374). The exhibit runs from October 13 to January 21, and is supposedly "the largest exhibition Ukraine has ever sent abroad and one rich in recently dicovered works of art." These treasures are "the legacy of the fierce Scythian nomads whose insatiable appetite for objects of gold has made Ukraine one of the most exciting frontiers in archaeology." (I copied all of that from the blurb). Anyway, now you know about it. MarinaK

Oh, that sounds like an interesting exhibit! Thanks for posting the information about it, Marina. In the spring I promised the kids that I would try to take them to Washington, DC, before the end of the fall, and they reminded me of my promise today, so maybe if we go, we will try to head a little further north for part of our trip because I would love to see that exhibit. Marina, are you still having problems with the forum or is everything working okay for you now? Thanks again for the great post!

I was "trolling" (hope that is the right word) to see if anyone was interested. If you want to see the flyer, e-mail me your address and I will mail you a copy. If you decide to come, maybe we can meet (nobody knows how great that museum is!) or something with the kiddies. There is also a magnificent library (central branch) that was recently renovated, and the botanical gardens in the immediate vicinity. Michelle, thank you also for asking: no, I am not having problems with the forum. I am hiding because life is somewhat difficult right now, and there is not a lot one can do about that except pray for an early end to school vacations (and maybe *he* can get transferred to Belgium or Switzerland for a year!). Take care. M |

Kate's son Vladimir has been going to school already for three weeks this school year. I felt badly for the kids in this area because they only got a two month summer vacation. Will your girls start back to school the tuesday after labor day? I was planning on waiting until then to start our school work, but we may start a few days later than that in a few of the subjects since I just realized this evening that I had not finished ordering all of the kids' text books - oops! Oh, well, it's mostly just their health books and Jordan's grammar book, and if I get them ordered by tomorrow afternoon, we should get them by the middle of next week, so we won't be too far behind. Jordan has already started some of her school work because she was so excited about it. My sister ordered her a Latin program that Jordan had really been wanting, and my daughter spent most of the day studying today. This evening she was reciting a poem about a little girl and a mouse to me in Latin. About our trip, I'd love to get to meet you! Let's definitely plan on getting together if the kids and I are able to take our trip. I really regretted not getting a chance to meet you on my last big trip. Michelle

http://search.ft.com/search/multi/globalarchive.jsp?docId=000831003150&query=russia&resultsShown=20&resultsToRequest=100 BBC MONITORING INTERNATIONAL REPORTS: RUSSIAN ECONOMY POISED ON VERGE OF DEVELOPMENT- PM
Moscow, 31st August: Russia's economy has passed through the stabilization phase and has reached the brink of development. Investments play a key role in that development, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov said at a government session on Thursday [31st August]. The cabinet is to consider prospects for investments and other issues. "Stabilization is followed by the development stage and today we are on the brink of this major stage, in which the key role is played by investments," the prime minister said, adding that this includes investments in industries, science and culture. Production-sharing agreements are another item on the cabinet's agenda. "Until now, the government has failed to fully provide for this means of investment," Kasyanov said. Russia began using production-sharing agreements in the middle of the 1990s and almost 20 deposits will now be developed on such a basis, he noted. "The profits that we get from two Far Eastern projects are minimum," he said. The full use of production-sharing accords requires related bills and the training of professionals, he said. A new edition of the bill on privatization of state property will also be discussed on Thursday. "Privatization is a very important process," Kasyanov said. Privatization "has not been an end in itself, although society has this very impression", he noted. Privatization in Russia has not been fully linked to structural reforms, he said. This problem must now be solved since "structural reforms are growing into a primary aspect of economic transformations", he said. The cabinet will also discuss a draft federal programme with the theme "Culture of Russia". President Vladimir Putin's message to the Federal Assembly describes the development of culture as a priority, Kasyanov said. "The government should consider the programme very attentively," he noted. Source: Interfax news agency, Moscow, in English 0733 gmt 31 Aug 00 /BBC
