I know who K. Philby was (English military officer who defected to the USSR), but what happened in Turkey? |

i don't have the time to look up all the sources and get the details straight, but basically, volkhov was a military or maybe GRU officer who contacted the british embassy in istanbul (maybe in the 50s or 60s?) and asked to defect. the message was sent to the responsible head at MI-6 - philby. he, of course, contacted the russians, who sent an assassination squad to turkey. philby (who flew to turkey) wrote in his memoirs that volkhov was last seen drugged, bandaged up from head-to-toe, and carried on a stretcher to an airplane waiting on the tarmac in istanbul. god only knows what the kgb did to him, if he actually *was* alive when they evacuated him. he probably went the way of popov in the flames. actually, it was probably a gross exaggeration of me to have mentioned this episode in connection with the sedating of the angry woman in murmansk. |

One had two "Soldier" and one "Officer" Georgij, another one had two "Soldier" Georgij. I keep 2 Crossess as biggest relics. It indeed was dangerous during Stalin's time. But how they'd exile to Siberia a Siberian Cossack, he? That what exactly happened with one my grandfather when he got caught by CheKa in Voronezh. They proposed a choice - a honorable death by shooting squad or an exile. He pretened to be offended and chosen the death. To humilaite him, they did opposite and sent him to a Siberian village.. a couple hundred miles away from his homeland.
