I have a 99 Dodge Intrepid. I took my car to the Dodge dealer for an engine problem. After tearing down the engine they said the the maintenance contract wouldn't cover any of the costs because they found 'sludge' in the engine. They told me this was due to not changing the oil every 3,000 miles. I did some checking and found out that it is common for this engine to 'burn' 1 to 1.5 qts of oil every 3,000 miles. This is NOT blowing it out the exhaust but 'cooking ' it down inside the engine! If this is correct every Intrepid engine should have sludge in it. The owners manual has 2 plans for oil changes; 1) every 3,000, 2) every 7,500 miles. I DID change my oil around every 6,000 miles. Unfortunately, I didn't expect this kind of problem in a 3 yr lease, and didn't save all of the receipts. By the way, I was told that receipts other than those from a Daimler/Chrysler dealership may not be acceptable as proof. They want me to pay $8,6000. for a new engine. Please respond if you are having a similar problem. My car is at the dealer now and decisions have to be made soon.
